Sun Damaged Skin? Follow These Tips!

Everyone experiences some sun damage to their skin in their life. The best way to prevent sun damage in to apply a non-comedogenic, broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher to your face everyday, rain or shine. Overexposure to harmful UV rays can cause dry, flaky skin, sunburns, and long-term changes like fine lines, wrinkles, and sunspots.

The best way to treat sun damaged skin is to not let it get damaged in the first place. Brandi Gregge, FNP-BC with Mint & Needle reiterated what we believed stating "Of course, I have to mention the importance of prevention. Use an SPF 30 and above every day. It is important to reapply every 2 hours if you're in direct sunlight."

You should examine your skin for changing sunspots or moles, which can be a sign of skin cancers like melanoma and carcinoma. Talk to your doctor if you suspect your spots are changing, getting darker, or getting bigger.

Rosehip Oil

Rosehip oilcontains vitamins C and E, antioxidants that prevent free radicals from causing sun damage in the first place. These vitamins reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation and sunspots by fighting those harmful free radicals. Rosehip also reduces inflammation and redness by moisturizing and nourishing the skin. It contains lycopene and vitamins that boost collagen production and improve the skin’s natural elasticity, smoothing the skin and reducing fine lines and wrinkles.

Tip: Apply Rosehip Oil at night to let it sink into the skin overnight.

Vitamin C Kit

Vitamin C is a natural antioxidant that combats free radical skin damage. For the best results, a concentration of Vitamin C between 10-20% should be used. While sunscreen can prevent some UV damage, adding a Vitamin C serum will boost the protective barrier on the skin. Vitamin C can also minimize fine lines and wrinkles, as well as brightening and evening out the skin tone.

Tip: Using a Vitamin C Kitcan help this powerful ingredient soak into the skin in multiple ways.

Lemon Oil

Lemon oil has been suggested to fight inflammation and free radical damage with antioxidants. It is also very useful for lightening the skin and may even the skin tone and fade sunspots. Lemon oil is an astringent and has antiseptic properties that can help clear skin and reduce acne pimples.

Tip: Adding a few drops of lemon oil into your Rosehip Oil treatment at night can help you reap the benefits of this essential oil.

Retinol Moisturizer

Retinol is a derivative of vitamin A. It helps reduce fine lines and wrinkles by increasing cell turnover rates, sloughing off dead skin to reveal the healthy skin underneath. It can also even the skin tone, smooth the skin, and reduce hyperpigmentation. No wonder retinol is considered the “gold standard” of skincare.

Anna D Guanche with Bella Skin Institute recommends this for treating sun damaged skin. "Topical retinoids can help to smooth wrinkles and also speed up the skin cell turnover and shedding of pigmented cells from the surface of the skin."

Tip: Start by using a retinol product a few times a week and work up from there, since retinol is a powerful ingredient and can be irritating.
