Ingredient Spotlight: Shea Butter

Shea butter is a skin miracle worker that originates from the fruit of the Shea tree, also known as a Karite tree, that flourishes in Africa. Shea butter is well-loved in the beauty industry and all over the world for its hydrating properties that improve the overall health of skin and hair. It nourishes the skin with essential fatty acids and collagen-producing nutrients, and its non-comedogenic properties mean that it won’t clog pores. Since it is natural, shea butter is safe to use on all skin types, although you should always patch test for individual allergies.

Radha Beauty features two products that include shea butter: our antiaging Miracle Retinol Moisturizer and our deep conditioning Argan Hair Mask. Read more about how shea butter smooths skin and hair for a shinier, healthier appearance below.

Shea Butter Benefits:

  1. Moisturizing
  2. Smoothing
  3. Anti-Aging
  4. Glow & Shine

Moisturizing

Shea butter contains essential fatty acids and vitamins that help hydrate and moisturize the skin. It can make the skin supple and smooth. These nutrients make it very effective on dry skin and even on skin that suffers from eczema and psoriasis.

Anna D Guanche, MD with Bella Skin Institute swears by the use of Shea Butter in your skincare routine. "Studies have shown that shea butter possess anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce inflammation of the skin. The vitamins and fatty acids can improve the skin barrier, leading to a more hydrated and smooth glowing skin!"

For similar reasons, shea butter can be hydrating for hair, smoothing the hair shaft and resulting in stronger, shinier hair. The oils in shea butter also have emollient properties that seal in moisture, soaking into skin and hair to create a moisture-locking protective barrier. This makes it a perfect addition to our hair mask that rehydrates the hair and scalp for shinier, softer hair.

Smoothing

Since shea butter can help produce collagen, the building block of healthy skin cells, it is known to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, resulting in a smoother, softer complexion. Shea butter is also highly sought after as a stretch mark cream for women since it can smooth marks and restores the natural elasticity of the skin.

Jené Luciani uses Skineez Shea Butter infused socks to smooth and moisturize her feet and swears by the ingredient. "Shea butter is an amazing natural ingredient that helps to hydrate and protect the skin."

It can also help smooth and moisturize damaged hair, nourishing the hair follicles. Split ends occur when the ends of hair strands become dry and brittle, eventually starting to “split.” Shea butter moisturizes and smooths the ends, preventing new split ends and taming old ones. It can even prevent hair loss by nourishing the scalp and hair follicles.

Anti-Aging

Shea butter is full of nourishing vitamins A and E. Vitamin A reduces fine lines and wrinkles, keeping skin softer and more supple. Vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant, helps to reduce scarring and acts as an anti-inflammatory. Catechins, which are also found in the butter, are an antioxidant that protects against free radical damage.

Glow & Shine

Since shea butter is so moisturizing due to those fatty acids we mentioned earlier, it provides a healthy and fresh glow to your skin. Add in the fact that it also reduces fine lines and wrinkles and you’re well on your way to a glowy, flawless finish.

But let’s not forget your hair! Shea butter also shines and moisturizes your hair for manageable, lustrous locks. In our Argan Oil Hair Mask, you also get the added benefits of argan oil for even shinier and healthier hair.

How to Use Shea Butter Products

For the Hair

Apply the Argan Oil Mask with shea butter to the hair after washing with shampoo and conditioner. Comb the product through the hair and allow it to sit on the hair for 10-20 minutes. For thicker hair, leave on for a longer time period. This will allow the hair to soak up all of the nutrients and good oils that are found in shea butter and the rest of the mask’s ingredients. Rinse and air dry for best results. This hair mask can be used 2-3 times a week.

For the Face

Apply our Miracle Retinol Moisturizer after using our Vitamin C Cleanser, Rosewater Toner, and Hyaluronic Acid Serum for best results. Evenly spread a dime-sized amount over the face and neck. The moisturizer will sink into the skin and provide glowing, healthy skin in no time.
