Cinnamon Scented Pinecones

I love cinnamon scented pinecones. They can be used all fall long and even long into winter. They’re a spicy treat that can be used in any room – a basket of these in your bathroom can help keep odors under wraps while being absolutely adorable. The more traditional display on your coffee table is beautiful as well.

Collect your pinecones first. You can make a day out of it and gather them on a wooded walk with friends or family. Kids should love this! If you’re in a southern climate where pinecones aren’t easily found outside, you can order a pack of them online.

Some people say to bake your pinecones in an oven to kill off bugs and bacteria. I personally would be wary of this, considering pine cones and pine needles are great fire starters. No need to start a potentially devastating fire just for a (wonderful smelling) DIY craft. Hose them off outside instead.

You can also add a few drops of a known anti-bacterial essential oil, like orange, if you choose.

Fill a small glass spray bottle with water and add a couple of drops of cinnamon esssential oil. You should be able to use 10-20 drops of essential oil safely.

Add your pinecones into a bag. Typically, these are done in gallon plastic zip bags, but if you’re trying to be ecofriendly you can use a paper bag. Spray the pinecones with your spray, pretty heavily spraying them with the mixture.

Close your bag tightly and allow to sit for 24-48 hours. The longer you let them sit in the bag with the mixture, the longer the scent will last.

If you want your pinecones to last a little longer, you can refresh them by spraying them with a diluted mixture after they have started to lose their aroma. The scent will not be as strong as if you left them in the bag, but it will be a nice booster to the smell.
