10 Holiday Season Essential Oil Recipes

Why Christmas Smells SO Good!

Christmas means goodies. These goodies are different things to different people, but they will always be positive memories, even to the most Christmas-hardened of indifferent Scrooges among us. No-one articulated the evocative power of sense memory better than the French writer Marcel Proust, who famously described the ability of a tea-soaked madeleine cake to transport him back to tender moments of his childhood spent with a favorite aunt. Earlier drafts of this description actually empowered different snacks with this time-traversing olfactory magic – toast with honey, a hard biscotti biscuit – but we all understand what Proust was getting at: good smells take us to good places in our minds.

And let’s be honest: Christmas smells GREAT. It’s as if every delicious aroma combination has license to luxuriate in every corner of our lives for a few weeks in December, with a richness and intensity we’d find overwhelming at any other time of year. But at Christmas, we surrender to the season, and to a joyful wonderland of familiar, comforting aromas.

Using a Diffuser for a Festive Home

We crave these seasonal scents for the duration of the holiday, so an essential oil diffuser is a perfect way to keep our home smelling festive (and diffusers also make perfect gifts). 10 drops of essential oil is a reliable amount to begin with – remember that pets and guests may be more sensitive to aromas than you are, so resist the temptation to over-season the air with too much Christmas! You’ll be cooking delicious-smelling food on the big day, and everyone is more liberal with their perfumes and colognes at this time of year, so ‘less is more’ is a great rule of thumb when blending your Christmas essential oils recipes.

You can have lots of fun with the ‘whens’ and ‘wheres’ of your Christmas aromatherapy scents, too. Try fresher, crisper notes for earlier in the day – Bergamot essential oil is a citrusy seasonal winner – and spicier aromas such as Cinnamon, Pine and Ginger as the cold dark evenings draw in. An evergreen essential oil such as Scotch Pine or Balsam Fir in your diffuser can make bath time a foresty Christmas dream; a hint of Vanilla essential oil in your hallway diffuser recipe will have guests clamoring for the seasonal treats on your dinner table. Be merry, be jolly, be creative!
