Self-Care Resolutions in the New Year

New Years resolutions are a big part of many of our lives. While most of us think about health-related resolutions to go to the gym more or to lose weight, a resolution can be anything you commit to in the new year. A great alternative to health related resolutions is committing to daily self-care.

What is self care?

Self care is the practice of taking care of your own physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing. Self care is a more holistic, global version of taking care of yourself, which makes it easier to do on a daily basis. It doesn’t require any fancy equipment or gym membership. It is more about making small changes that will last for a long period of time. The goal of self care is simply to reduce stress and improve personal wellbeing.

Idea #1: Adjust Your Morning Routine

Your morning routine sets the tone for your entire day. If it’s rushed and worried, you’re more likely to stay rushed and worried throughout the day. Instead, take the time to relax and slow down. Put the phone down, take small sips of coffee or tea and reflect on your goals from the day in the quiet of dawn. Simple changes like packing your work bag or lunch the night before can make the morning quite a bit smoother.

Idea #2: Leisure and Hobbies

Sometimes self care is finding ways to enjoy yourself. Finding new ways to have fun can include finding new hobbies, taking a vacation to relax, or spending time with friends. It may seem odd to have a resolution to relax more in the new year, but it makes sense. When you relax more, your emotional and mental wellbeing improves. Plus, taking a break can improve your productivity in the long run.

Idea #3: Improve Sleep

Sleep is very beneficial for both physical and mental wellbeing. Most adults need seven to nine hours of sleep to feel the benefits. If you’re not quite getting the required amount of sleep, try switching up your nighttime routine. You could head to bed a bit earlier to give yourself enough time to fall asleep. Before bed, incorporate calming activities like reading, journaling, listening to music, or meditating.

Finding Success

Once you’ve determined which self care resolutions make sense for you, you can to create and track habits that will support those goals. Start small and be patient. You will have mistakes. You will fall off the wagon. The important part is that you keep going. Be flexible with yourself and learn to keep working at it. Track your habits in a planner or journal to keep yourself accountable. Following these tips will help you find success in your new years resolutions.
