What Essential Oils are Not Safe for Pregnancy?

Are essential oils safe for pregnancy? The short answer is yes..and no. Some essential oils are safe and recommended by aromatherapists, while others are not recommended for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Read more below!

Aromatherapy can continue to be an invigorating and soothing part of your life and throughout your pregnancy. It can even assume greater importance in its ability to address many of the mental and physical stressors common to pregnancy. It can be very hard to decide whether it’s safe to use essential oils in pregnancy because there is a wide variety of opinions on the matter. It is important to discuss usage with a medical professional experienced with essential oils and to be cautious with their use.

Many essential oils that provide benefits to your physical and mental health that can come in handy while you’re bringing your child to term. As with use in non-pregnant individuals, essential oil usage is individualized. We are all different; there is no standard approach to essential oils. It is always important to know how to use the oils safely during pregnancy in accordance with your individual needs and to know which ones are likely to help you. If you have never used essential oils and are pregnant, you should always consult with your healthcare provider prior to use. I advise you to start low and go slow. Start with just a few drops of your safe essential oils and diffuse in a large area.

How should I use essential oils while pregnant?

When used topically while pregnant, we recommend using a 1% dilution of essential oils or less. This means 6 drops essential oil in 30 ml of carrier oil. We solely recommend that our oils be used externally. Research about consumption has not confirmed the safety of consuming any oils. You can apply the oils topically or diffuse them and gain the same therapeutic benefits.

What essential oils are NOT safe during pregnancy?

Radha Beauty essential oils that are not recommended for pregnancy include Clary Sage, Cinnamon, Rosemary, Oregano and Clove. Essential oils that contain high levels of phenols, ethers, or aromatic aldehydes should not be taken during pregnancy or while you’re breastfeeding your child.

Which essential oils are safe for pregnant women?

The Radha Beauty essential oils that I absolutely recommend would be orange, lavendereucalyptus, and rosehip.

Orange

Orange essential oil can address the dry, irritated skin that often results in stretch marks. Orange essential oil can increase the skin’s absorption of vitamin C while promoting collagen production and healthy blood flow, reducing or even removing the presence of stretch marks.

Lavender

Stress is a silent killer and lavender essential oil can be of great assistance in helping you to relax. Though the oil itself has been shown to hold significant calming and soothing properties, we recommend pairing its usage of relaxing breathing techniques.

Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus oil may combat fatigue by improving blood flow, which can give your organs and muscles the energy you need to get through your day.

Rosehip

Rosehip oil is recommended for use with stretch marks due to its ability to reduce their appearance using omega 3s and healthy vitamins. It also helps to even out skin tone, reduce redness, and brighten skin.

Remember that Radha Beauty essential oils are 100% pure, natural, and unrefined making them extremely potent. As stated in many of my previous blogs, a little goes a long way.

While there are some oils you’ll want to avoid during pregnancy for the most part essential oil can be an important part of a healthy pregnancy. Essential oils can help promote balance throughout your body. Though pregnancy can be a difficult and lengthy time, carrying your child doesn’t have to mean giving up everything you enjoy. Just remember, a little goes a long way and to always check with your healthcare practitioner, midwife and/or aromatherapist first!
