Men’s Skincare Guide

Is men and women’s skin different? Does it need different care? Physically, there are a few ways men’s skin is different from women’s skin. For example, men tend to have larger pores and to be more prone to blackheads, congestion, and breakouts due to more active sebaceous glands. In addition, men tend to have thicker dermis structure, which is believed by some researchers to support the skin and keep wrinkles away. Men also tend to lose collagen sooner in life than women, which means signs of aging can show up faster. Of course, men also need to take care of their skin in a way that accounts for facial hair.

So, what does that mean for men’s skincare? For one thing, shaving facial hair can cause irritation and sensitivity. It’s a good idea to use gentler products that are targeted towards sensitive skin. Exfoliants can also be used on recently (after 24 hours) shaved skin to avoid ingrown hairs and bumps. Usually the only difference between men and women’s skincare is fragrances and marketing, so men should use products that target the issues they have without worrying about the targeted gender.

Men are commonly under-interested in skincare, so keeping it easy and light can help keep the routine consistent. A routine that starts early will help avoid the sudden onset of signs of aging like age spots and wrinkles. Try a cleanser, a moisturizer and/or serum, and a beard oil to keep facial hair soft and nourished. Multitasking products are also a great option to keep your skin looking fresh and youthful with just a few products.

Men’s Facial Products by Skin Type

For dry skin, a morning moisturizer with sunscreen can fight harmful UV rays and help moisturize your skin. A facial lotion also keeps your skin soft and smooth for a youthful look. Dry skin also benefits from an exfoliant to help scrub off dead skin cells. Just make sure to moisturize after using to avoid the exfoliant drying out your skin more by exposing the new skin to the air.

For oily skin, you’ll want to balance the skin. Be sure not to strip the skin, which can cause the skin to overreact and create even more oil. Instead of stripping the skin, use a gentle cleanser to remove dirt and impurities. You’ll also want to apply a light lotion at night to keep your skin hydrated without overproducing skin-clogging sebum.

Beard Care

Giving your beard the right care is essential for your skin and facial hair health. One simple change is to invest in a safety razor instead of a multiblade. It can help reduce bumps and irritation from shaving once you learn to use it properly. Wash your beard with a facial cleanser and use a scrub or exfoliant to remove dead skin cells hiding underneath your facial hair. Support your beard with a beard oil to keep it soft and manageable.
