Balancing the Chakras with Essential Oils

Chakras are centers of energy found within our bodies. When these chakras are open and energy can flow freely, we experience harmony in our lives and in our emotions. However, when our energies are unbalanced and our chakras are closed or blocked, we can feel emotionally unstable and unsteady in our lives.

We can use essential oils in multiple ways to rebalance our chakras and find peace. Chakras can be balanced using meditations, asana yoga flows, yogi fasting. You can place diluted essential oils on your chakra points during meditation or before a targeted yoga flow. You can also diffuse essential oils during meditation, during yoga, or in your daily lives.

Muladhara – Base/Root Chakra

Centered at the base of the human spine, the base chakra is our grounding. It’s our foundation. When it is opened, the base chakra allows us to feel steadfast against challenges. When it is closed, we can feel unsteady and unbalanced. The base chakra is also associated with basic survival needs – shelter, food, and a sense of belonging. If our base chakra is closed, we can feel unsecure in ourselves and our situation.

The element associated with the base chakra is Earth. We use grounding, earthy essential oils to connect to it including cedarwood, patchouli, and frankincense.

Svadhistana - Sacral Chakra

Just below the belly button, the sacral chakra is our emotional center. It allows us to feel our emotions and to relate to the emotions of others. It’s associated with feelings of joy, creativity, and pleasure. When our sacral chakra is closed, we feel emotionally unstable and out of control.

The element associated with the sacral chakra is Water. It is often related to sexual energy, and many of the essential oils we use to connect to the sacral chakra are known to be aphrodisiacs including ylang ylang, patchouli, orange, clary sage, clove, and geranium.

Manipura - Solar Plexus Chakra

Located in the upper abdomen, the solar plexus chakra is our center of confidence and empowerment. An open solar plexus chakra allows us to be confident in expressing yourself to the world, resulting in feelings of peace and harmony with ourselves and the world. When the solar plexus chakra is blocked, we feel helpless, shamed, or doubtful.

The element associated with the solar plexus chakra is fire. We use essential oils that aid in confidence and positive energy when connecting with the solar plexus chakra including cedarwood, frankincense, lemon, rosemary, peppermint, and pink grapefruit.

Anahata or Heart Chakra

The heart chakra is located just over the heart in the center of the chest. It the connection between the spiritual chakras, located above the heart, and the material chakras, located below. The heart chakra allows us to love others and create positive relationships with others. When the heart chakra is closed, it can create a lack of compassion, empathy, feelings of separation, or foster broken and unhealthy relationships.

The element associated with the heart chakra is air. We use essential oils that promote feelings of love and compassion to connect with it including bergamot, lavender, ylang ylang, and cinnamon.

Vishuddha or Throat Chakra

The throat chakra is unsurprisingly located at the throat. It is associated with communication and self-expression. When we have an open, clear throat chakra, we can clearly share our ideas with others and listen attentively to others. When we have a blocked throat chakra, we might have trouble saying how we feel or struggling with social anxiety or the inability to listen.

The element associated with the throat chakra is sound. We use essential oils that promote feelings of calm, strength, and confidence to connect with the throat chakra including geranium, peppermint, and lavender.

Ajna or Third Eye Chakra

The third eye chakra is found between the eyes and connects us to intuition and the big picture. It’s often associated with wisdom, emotional awareness, and the ability to learn. When this chakra is open, we may feel clarity in following our intuition and gut feelings. When the chakra is closed, it can be hard to focus and may be too logical without giving enough credit to your intuition and emotional intelligence.

The element associated with the third eye chakra is light. We can connect to this chakra by using essential oils that bring emotional clarity and balance our inner energy including rosemary, clary sage, frankincense, and patchouli.

Sahasrara or Crown Chakra

The crown chakra is the highest chakra and is located at the crown of the head. It is associated with a true spiritual connection and higher consciousness. Very few people are able to truly open the crown chakra. When the crown chakra is blocked, we experience a lack of empathy, a disconnect from spiritually and the inability to connect with others.

The element associated with the crown chakra is the divine. We use essential oils to strengthen and balance our energy to try to connect with and strengthen our crown chakra including frankincense, cedarwood, and lavender.
