10 Steps to a Healthier New Year

The new year is here! In all of our celebrating and saying goodbye to 2019, it's tough to think about what we could be doing to be healthier. After all, who wants to think about health when you're counting down the last minutes of the year? Instead of having to rack your brain to come up with what could work for you, we have lined up some suggestions that would work for anyone if you just put in a tiny bit of effort.

Here are ten small steps that can lead up to a thoughtlessly healthier new year.

1. Drink Water!

We know, we know- everyone is sick of being told they should chug gallons of water a day as a solution to most of life’s health problems. It is hard to forget the health benefits of taking in a glass of water every hour, but when is the last time any of us followed through? Get a water bottle, or use an older one, that you'll remember to keep on hand every day- and keep in mind how much you're drinking. Eight glasses a day certainly could not hurt!

2. Remember to Sleep

Between 7.5 to 9 hours of comfortable sleep every night can improve your life drastically. If you struggle to sleep, anessential oil diffuser can help! Just diffuse some essential oils that work for you--lavender or eucalyptus, for instance, and drift off into a peaceful slumber. The calming aromas of essential oils can also allow you to focus at work and keep anxiety at bay generally.

3. Communicate

If there’s something wrong with your relationships--be they friendships, romances, or with coworkers--talk out your problems. Be clear with the other person on what you need, and what you deserve, but also listen to their concerns. Change what you are able to change to improve your relationships, and always make sure to keep lines of communication open.

4. Monitor Expectations

Don't go into the new year expecting yourself to lose those pesky twenty pounds automatically, or suddenly finish a novel you've just been thinking about for ten years. Take steps toward those goals, but also understand that it is all right if you don't reach them immediately. A small step is better than standing still.

5. Take Care of Your Skin

Something as simple as a goodorganic rose water toner can be all it takes to bring vitality back to your skin. When you look good, you're more likely to feel good, so be sure to give yourself a fair chance at that.

6. Get That Body Moving!

Go outside, run, walk, swim--whatever you enjoy. Being active shouldn't feel like a chore. If you like skipping rope, then do it! Just get moving. If you're not sure about what you want to do, this is a great chance to look into local groups or gyms. A lot of people find exercise to be more relaxed when they're part of a team.

7. Share the Love

Be kind and thankful to the people around you. Treat strangers with compassion and kindness, and you'll be surprised how much gets returned to you. People at their very core want to be good and kind to one another. Take time to help a neighbor carrying up a massive package to his apartment, or send a card instead of a text to a friend.

8. A Diet Is Just What You Eat

Don't put the huge burden of pressure on yourself to try and swap diets in the new year. Slow, gradual changes can help, or even just lowering serving size. You don't have to eat broccoli to get in shape. If you want to lose weight, starving yourself or upsetting your schedule will only offer extremely temporary changes. You deserve better than that. Make wholesale changes to your diet so you eat healthier foods, and take as much time as you need to implement the changes. The end result will be amazing.

9. Schedules Are Not Overrated

Human beings crave structure, even if we don't want to admit it. If you have to get up for work at eight, the best thing is waking up at eight on your off days. It'll make workdays more manageable and allow better sleep. You don't have to plan out every millisecond of every day, but give yourself guidelines for what to expect. Even if you need to figure out when to work on a new hobby or skill, making a schedule for it will help you get away from spending that time on social media or TV.

10. Be Mindful of Yourself

You’re just one person! Be kind and thoughtful with how you treat yourself. It can be so easy to be down on yourself, even when you don’t deserve it. Take a spa day with aDead Sea mud face mask get to know yourself better and give yourself that relaxation you deserve. If you start to feel lost or worried, reach out for help and someone will almost always reach back. This next year has the opportunity to be your best year yet, so work with yourself to make sure that happens!
