The Power of Ayurveda and Vitamin C for Your Skin

Lately, I have been reflecting on my life. I’m thankful my family was able to pass down our ancestor’s traditions and culture. As a child, I wasn’t thinking of our remedies and culture as powerful ties that would keep us connected.

As I age, I understand why it was so important to them that their children know about traditional healing and remedies. It is becoming increasingly important to me that I share this information and raise awareness about Ayurvedic medicine. Mother Earth can heal, and we have all we need!

When I think about the word “Ayurveda”, I am reminded of family, history, and healing. The Sanskrit word, “Ayurveda” is a combination of two words. "Ayur" means life and "veda" translates into science or knowledge. I look at Ayurveda as the understanding of life and it’s connections.

When you get a cold, what is the first thing a person will tell you to do? “Get orange juice or tea”, they say or “Get soup”, they’ll tell you. Why do people always suggest food or drink and why such specific foods & drinks? Inherently, we know that healing requires us to look inside

When thinking about healing, people will tell you to fill up on options that are full of vitamins and minerals. They’ll suggest bright foods that bring forth life. Citrus and greens are two foods that promote wellness while being full of vitamins and antioxidants. These foods are rich in Vitamin C.

Vitamin C’s anti-inflammatory powers are great for your immune system and your skin. Eating Vitamin C rich foods is a major part of the Ayurvedic practice. A diet rich in foods with a high concentration of Vitamin C can help skin retain it’s moisture while preventing inflammatory responses like eczema. These foods also help to prevent the development of cold and flu symptoms. So much of our immune system is in our digestive tract and on our skin. An antioxidant and vitamin-rich environment also helps skin attain its ultimate health.

Coating your skin with Vitamin C and antioxidants can offer your skin a pick me up. This is especially nice in the winter months when it’s harder to get that sun-kissed tone. I suggest using a natural skincare regimen that is rich in Vitamin C.
